Bad News for Travelers! American Airlines Raises Bag Fees Again

As the second quarter of 2026 begins, news from American Airlines has made air travel even more difficult for budget travelers. This major US carrier has increased its checked bag fees again as a consequence of the evaluation of fuel prices in accordance with the current situation. The new checked bag fees will take effect for flight reservations made on 9th April and after that date. American Airlines is not the only airline to raise its bag fees; there are other major carriers, such as United, JetBlue, Delta, and Southwest Airlines, that have hiked their bag fees. 

How much have baggage fees increased at American Airlines?

American Airlines has increased its bag fee for Economy travelers. Although the bag fees may vary by route and departure time, as per the American Airlines update exclusive for Basic Economy flyers. For domestic flights, including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, and short-haul international flights, the bag fees are given below when purchased at the airport:

• The first checked bag is $50.
• The second checked bag is $60.
• The third checked bag is $200.

Those who have booked their Basic Economy tickets may receive a $5 discount when booked through its official channels. So, the effective baggage fees will be $45 for the first checked bag, $55 for the second, and so on for all domestic routes, including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Canada. For the rest of the domestic routes, if the issuance date is beyond 18th May, the bag fees for Basic Economy would be:

• $55 for the first checked bag purchase,
• $65 for the second checked bag purchase, 
• Minus $5 when booked via aa.com.

For flights to and from selected South American cities, tickets booked on 9th April and beyond will include a $70 bag fee for the 1st checked bag, and additional South American cities will soon be added for this beyond 18th May. Those who have joined the AAdvantage program continue to get the flexibility to receive complimentary bags on most American Airlines flights and its partners, but subject to fare conditions. Not just that, the AAdvantage credit card members will also get the benefits of a free checked bag on selected domestic itineraries.

Passengers booked in cabins other than Economy and flying on domestic and international routes will not face a baggage fee hike and will continue to receive complimentary checked bags. If any passenger is found to be active-duty U.S. military personnel, they can also receive complimentary checked-bag benefits on all flights operated by American Airlines. Are there any other changes to American Airlines' Basic Economy tickets?

Indeed, with the announcement that was released on 9th April by American Airlines, there are some other changes besides the increase of checked bag fees for Basic Economy flyers that might have potential significance during travel planning and flight reservations. According to the recent update, the airline has not spoken about any ticket price increase, which means it will continue to offer the lowest deals for Basic Economy fares and enable passengers to enjoy the benefit of accessing American Airlines' extensive network and complementary services. When booking American Airlines Basic Economy ticket flights, it comes with one free carry-on & personal item to take on board. Additionally, tickets booked on or after 18th May can be selected for a fee and may not be eligible for complementary or systemwide upgrades, even if they have AAdvantage status.  

Other essential changes for American Airlines passengers:

• Implementing later this year, AAdvantage members with no status and select co-branded credit cards will be boarding in Group 7 during flight reservations. 
• AAdvantage status members with credit card holders will be on the priority list during boarding, even for Basic Economy tickets.
• AAdvantage status holders get complimentary Wi-Fi, seat selection, and upgrades when booked on a Main Cabin fare, regardless of status level.
